How To Retire At Forty

I turned 30 last December and it really got me thinking about my plans for the next ten years.

“A job isn’t something that you enjoy. its something that you turn up to in order to pay the bills.”

This is something that my dad said to me growing up. At the time when my dad said this to me it didn’t make much sense.

Now that I myself am a father and husband it makes even less.

I remember my dad wasn’t the happiest person growing up. Spending 40 hours a week doing something that you really dislike probably does that to a person.

Since September of 2017 I returned to full time work.

Anyone that does matched betting and arbitrage will know that you make about 70-80% of your profits on the weekend. Whilst casino offers can be done pretty much anytime.

So I made the decision to go back to work four days a week.

Financially it made a lot of sense.

Now I don’t hate my work. It has some positives but probably like most people I don’t really enjoy being there.

Do I want to be there for the next 10 years of my life?

Hell no!

I would love to be able to work part time doing something I enjoy and have other investments subsidize the loss of a full time wage.

How To Retire At Forty

My plan is to become financially self sufficient by the time I am forty.

By reinvesting the money I make from trading, betting and arbitrage. Alongside creating other more passive incomes much like this blog.

To maintain my current lifestyle that would mean I would need to make around £30,000 a year. However that is a low estimate and obviously a lot could change in the next ten years.

Most people would agree that your output is dependent on the things that you consistenly read, hear and talk about.

The majority of what I read online comes into these categories.

Entrepreneurship

Passive Income

Early Retirement

Frugality

So that should put me in pretty good stead but I don’t really put enough of what I read into practice.

For example if I look at entrepreneurship. I like most people have had hundreds of ideas over the years for a potential business or passive income.

Not saying they were all great.

But how many have I actually acted on?

Two………………..

This blog being one of those.

Even then it took me about two years between actually thinking about writing a blog around making money from sports betting. To actually buying a domain and writing content.

The second was ramping up my matched betting/arbitrage operation. Which in hindsight has probably cost me a lot of money as the value of offers has decreased over time.

This is something that I am going to tackle this year. Be way more active in attempting to produce further incomes.

Outside of the sports betting markets.

Embracing Frugality

There are various early retirement calculators out there.

For example this one from networthify.

But the premise is pretty simple. Have more money coming in then is going out. Invest your savings and allow compound interest to keep adding up. Eventually it will get to the point where the interest from your savings will cover your expenses.

Now of course that are a lot more variables to look at. Everybody has different lifestyles, assets and expenses.

However it seems like the most accessible way for most people to get to early retirement (myself included) is by saving money.

I have always been a pretty frugal individual. Even before I started playing poker and betting/trading I had a pretty good idea of value.

You can ask my wife what a cheap skate I am.

“£10,000 on a wedding? Seems kind of stupid for something that lasts one day.”

“Probably better saving that for a deposit on a house”

“£500 for a watch. My phone can tell the fucking time.”

So yeah frugality or being a cheap son of a b**** as others may call it comes pretty naturally to me.

What doesn’t come naturally to me is the boring aspect of saving. Switching insurance, gas, electric, internet providers. I know that potentially this will save me hundreds over a year. So that is something that I should really make an effort with.

Increasing My Areas Of Income

I currently have three incomes.

My betting and trading portfolio

You can read more in depth about this here.

My job

There is room for progression but it would have a negative effect on both my betting and trading portfolio. Alongside this blog and any further projects I would like to work on.

I have always viewed my work as something that pays the bills. While I try to scale up my ability to make an full time income online. Whether this has/or will pay dividends in the long run I am not too sure.

This blog

Smartsportstrader.com is probably the area of income that I could scale up the most. I currently make a small revenue from this site.

Mostly by being an affiliate for both Oddsmonkey and Profit Maximiser. Two services which provide the tools for making good money from the sports betting markets.

The beauty of the internet though is that there is always a broader audience to reach out. Whilst I am quite happy with the regular stream of traffic I get to this blog. I have become a little lazy with it. When there was only 10 or 20 people a day reading it. I was much more consistent in putting out content. Now there are a few hundred visitors a day I generally put up something once or twice a month.

Sam Priestley wrote a great blog post called Ethical online business – make money whilst sticking to your morals.

This really sums up how I feel about affiliation in the sports betting world. The people that make the most money are the ones that exploit problem gamblers.

Be this tipsters promoting bookmakers on a revenue share or review sites highlighting tipsters that have had one great month but are overall going to lose money.

You can make way more money exploiting the undisciplined punter or problem gambler.

Rather then showing that in order to really make money from the sports betting markets. Discipline and a long term view are key.

The truth is there are only a few good services that really offer value. So my options for increasing revenue to this site ethically is really to reach a broader audience and keep plugging matched betting, arbitrage and trading.

50K Betting And Trading Challenge – December Results, Goals For 2018

The last month of 2017 has been and gone. Did the betting and trading portfolio continue to bring in a profit?

Matched Betting – Sports Offers, Accumulators, Arbitrage

December was a pretty average month if terms of profit from matched betting offers and arbitrage. Running pretty poorly with the advantage betting accumulator refund offers. On a run of 36 consecutive losses at the moment. Would nice if they would turn around in January as that would boost profits quite considerably.

There were 203 matched betting offers, arbs and accumulator bets made in December.

A total profit of £578 was made.

Advantage Play – Casino Offers

The gods of variance were fairly kind this month with a £431 win from a £10 slots refund. Other then that though it feels pretty much like groundhog day slogging through casino offers. It can seem like you are just chucking money away with loss after loss. Then a one big win will shoot you back into the green.

I took part in 109 offers this month.

A total profit of £902 was made

Trading Results

I focused more of my time on pre match trading this month. Looking at getting myself in positions where I think the risk vs reward ratio is favourable. Then relying on the markets to react as they usually do.

My biggest single profit was £44 on the Man City vs Bournemouth game.

A total profit of £160 was made from pre match trading.

Tipster Services

After removing Quentin Franks racing from my portfolio. I was looking at adding some other tipster services to fill the gap. At the moment however given my bankroll and the amount I would be staking it’s not worth it.

I think my time would be better off spent focusing on other areas. For example arbitrage where my money can compound and grow without the variance included with straight betting.

Lots of people seem to frown on arbitrage betting as its the quickest way to get your accounts closed. However there are several bookmaker that I have barely used for matched betting (Stan James, Sportingbet, Marathon.).

Arbitrage allows me to take some value from them before being limited. Makes sense to keep exploiting them until I can’t anymore. Then move on to the higher variance world of straight betting and following tipster services.

Sports Betting Results

In December I made 14 bets.

A total profit of £258 was made.

I should note the Sampdoria vs SPAL game is showing as the 2nd Feb 2099. This seems to be some kind of error with the Bettin.gs software.

Summary

2017 has been a good year for me personally. I am healthy in a positive relationship and have an awesome little family.

In terms of financial goals I am not hitting the levels of profits I would have liked too. I can’t complain though as I am blessed to be living in a country and a time where these opportunities even exist.

Not made any leaps in my trading. I just use methods that are relatively low risk and I have found to be consistently profitable in the long run.

My goals for 2018

  • Get out of the house more – I have found myself attached to my laptop way too much in 2017. In 2018 I really want to get out walking and being much more active.
  • Look at other investments – Matched betting, arbitrage and advantage play are great ways of compounding your original investment. In 2018 I really want to look at other ways of compounding my money passively.
  • Scale up pre match trading – I have been pre match trading for years now and feel really comfortable trading these markets. In the match odds markets I could really be using much larger stakes when the big opportunities arise.
  • Write more, develop this blog – Two of my favourite blogs to read are Sam Priestley’s blog and Mr Money Mustache. These are two blogs that I think offer a lot of value and cover really interesting subjects. I would really like to branch out and write about things that aren’t directly related to the sports betting markets. As once you understand Matched Betting, Arbing and Value Betting you have a really solid cornerstone to start making good money.

50K Betting And Trading Challenge – November Results

As we creep closer to the end of 2017 are profits starting to scale up?

Is £50,000 within a 12 month period looking at all possible?

Matched Betting – Sports Offers, Accumulators, Arbitrage

50K Betting And Trading Challenge - November Results

November wasn’t the greatest month in terms of profit for Matched Betting and Arbitrage. In total there were 213 offers and arbitrage bets.

Around an average of £3 per offer/arb was made.

A total profit of £643 was made.

Nothing really new to report here. I did a few plus ev accumulators and took advantage of some decent odds boosts. Whilst getting involved in as many matched betting offers as possible.

Also used accounts that are promotion banned for arbitrage bets. Alongside a few other bookmakers that don’t offer any or few promotions.

50K Betting And Trading Challenge - November Results

This November I really tried hit every low – medium risk offer possible. Then reuse those profits to attack some of the higher risk offers. Unfortunately I just can’t seem to hit a decent sized win with these higher risk offers the last few months.

It’s been the same story. Grind out the profits on the smaller offers. Then give it back on the higher risk, higher stake offers.

Obviously if I increased my volume of high risk offers then the variance should smooth out. However any big downswings would then reduce my bankroll for arbing and matched betting. Which would lower the zero risk profits from that side of my portfolio.

So my low risk pussy approach to casino offers will continue for the near future.

50K Betting And Trading Challenge - November Results

I took part in 139 offers in November.

A total profit of £616 was made.

Trading Results

I barely traded at all in November. Just been really struggling to find the time to trade.

Been actively trying to spend more time with my wife and kids. As it does seem like I spent the majority of the time sitting in front of the computer with a cup of tea. As such trading is an area where I just haven’t done much at all in November.

In total I made 3 trades and a loss of –£18 was made.

Quentin Franks Racing – Tipster Service

Anyone that has been reading this challenge will know that Quentin Franks has really struggled this year. There have been a few comments suggesting that I drop this service as it seems to have lost its edge.

In November I decided to stop following Quentin Franks.

It is a service that I have made money from overall. However given how tough it is to follow the advised bets and it does speed up bookmaker limitations I won’t be following it any more.

For example selections are usually sent around 09.00.

For me this meant rushing home after dropping the kids of at school. Or often taking my laptop in the car with me and frantically placing bets when the email arrived.

When Quentin Franks Racing was crushing it month after month. This didn’t seem like a huge amount of effort. This year though it has been something of a drag.

Quentin Franks did have a profitable month in November according to official results. It is a service that I will continue to keep an eye on. But I am pretty happy with my decision to let it go (cue the frozen music) for now.

Sports Betting Results

In November I made 14 bets.

A total profit of £323 was made.

My overall betting stats for this year are looking pretty solid.

164 bets

9.1% return on investment

£1113 Profit

50K Betting And Trading Challenge - November Results

It should be noted that the Juventus game should have IP (In-play) next to it. As they were backed when surprisingly 0-1 down at home to Benevento.

Pretty happy with my sports betting.

I know I have an decent edge in mixed martial arts betting. But I can’t really increase the volume of bets in these markets. As my approach to this market isn’t heavily based on statistics but based on my own knowledge of the sport. So personally I only take spots that I see obvious value in.

Summary

I turned 30 this month and have had a big think about life going forward. There is still great opportunity with matched betting and advantage play. It is relatively easy money to make and can be scaled up.

Sure it is not as profitable as it was 5 years ago.

However the same can be said about Betfair trading, arbitrage betting, poker, selling on Amazon.

And that is often enough to put people off even trying to start to make money from any of these things.

But when these opportunities do exist its important to make the most of them and grab them by the balls. I don’t want to be looking back in 5 years and saying “fuck why didn’t I make the most of that.”

My plan going forward is really to hammer every bit of profit I can out of advantage play, arbitrage and matched betting. Then reinvest those profits and compound my bankroll.

Sports betting and trading are still area’s that I want to more time and money into. However I have been looking at more passive investments recently.

Cryptocurrencies are gaining a lot of traction at the moment which is something I studying. It is something that I will certainly be investing in the near future. ( If anyone can recommend some good reading material or videos, please drop me a comment below.)

The Football Index also looks like interesting platform that could be a really good investment. I have dipped my toes into it this month.

November felt like a month where although I put in a decent amount of work. The profits just didn’t really seem to hitting the levels I am expecting. Which has been a recurring theme the last few months.

This pretty much sums up this 50k betting and trading challenge. I need to make some significant changes in order to hit bigger monthly profits. And perhaps make a good push towards £50,000 profit before April 2018 comes around.

One positive thing that I will note is that December has started off really profitable.

50K Betting And Trading Challenge – October Results

October was a month where I really went back to keeping things very simple. Using mostly matched betting and arbitrage to bring in the profits. Did this approach lead to increased profits?

Matched Betting – Sports Offers, Accumulators, Arbitrage

50k betting challenge OctoberOctober was a month of good volume. As I increased my focus on arbitrage betting. Whilst continuing to get on as many matched betting offers as possible. In total there were 272 bets made in relation to arbitrage, matched betting and plus ev accumulators.

A total profit of £1139 was made.

My tactic for arbitrage betting was to use Oddsmonkey’s oddsmatcher software on week days. Then take up daily subscriptions of more advanced arbitrage software on Saturdays when there is the most opportunity.

50k betting challenge OctoberThe betting gods treated me a lot better in October after a slow month in September. In total I took part in 118 advantage play offers.

A total profit of £827 was made.

I have noticed a drop in the amount of good reload offers I am getting from casinos. It does seem like casino’s are tightening their belts a little with these. But there have still been a decent amount of offers overall. I have found myself taking advantage of a lot of Play Ojo’s free spin offers. Which are pretty consistent and usually offer good value.

50k betting challenge October

Another low month of trades. Where I have basically only traded on Saturdays using a few tricks on the Smarkets exchange. I don’t want to give away what I do on Smarkets completely. As this creates competition for the liquidity I use.

What I will say though is that the money flow is different in Smarkets. In comparison to other betting exchanges like Betfair. It is an exchange that generally follows Betfair but is used mostly by matched bettors. This creates some good low risk trading opportunities if you have some patience.

In total there were 7 trades made in October. A profit of £71 was made.

Quentin Franks Racing – Tipster Service

I bet on 47 selections from Quentin Franks in October.

A profit of £71 was made.

Last month I wrote that I was considering removing Quentin Franks from my portfolio. There were a few comments that also backed up these feelings. Again results have not been great and since the challenge started Quentin Franks is still in the red.

However given the long term nature of betting. I have decided to give it until the end of the year before making a decision. It is possible that the service could have a great November and December which could turn the year around.

Summary

October was a solid month in terms of results. I seem to have gone full circle in my betting career as I initially built my bankroll with matched and arbitrage. Then moved on to focusing more on sports betting and trading.

Now I have  once again returned to really focusing on using the original two methods ahead of trading and betting. In order to try and push my monthly profits to greater heights.

Scaling up my profits has been something I have really struggled to do in this 50k betting challenge. At the beginning of April when I started the challenge I made £2014. Here we are in October with a similar monthly profit of £2037.

Football trading is something that I also want to spend more time on. The last few months I have really slacked off and not been looking at the markets as much. But really with a bigger bankroll this is an area where I could scale up my profits. There are still lots of opportunities in these markets it’s just about spending time looking for them.

Here are the overall results for the month.

50K Betting And Trading Challenge – September Results

After six months I’m now at the half way mark for the 50k in a year betting and trading challenge. Did September bring me any closer to making this a realistic target?

Matched Betting – Sports Offers, Accumulators, Arbitrage

50k betting and trading challenge September

During September I have taken part in 241 matched betting, arbitrage and plus ev accumulator offers. A total profit of £892 was made.

My volume was a bit less then August where I did 261 offers. My profit also dipped compared with August. I think this is partly down to letting a lot of the plus ev accumulators run rather then laying for a guaranteed profit. In theory this should even out in the long run so I am not too concerned.

Also been making small arbitrage bets with with Oddsmonkey’s oddsmatcher software on accounts that I have been promo banned from. This brings in small continuous profits that help cushion the variance of the accumulators.

50k betting and trading challenge September

September marked the worst month so far in terms of profit from Advantage play offers. It was looking quite good at one point after a few wins on some of the lower risk offers started to build up.

However a few high risk offers towards the end of the month turned what was looking like an average month into a poor one. Again its just a case of grinding through the variance and continuing to put in the volume.

In September I took part in 102 advantage play offers. A small profit of £91 was made.

Trading Results

My trading and interest in trading has really suffered the last few months. It basically comes down to time and the lack of it that I can invest into trading at the moment. One of the best ways of trading the football pre match is to react to information before the majority of the market. I just haven’t found myself able to do this very often lately.

In September there have been a few trades mostly on secondary football markets. In the match odds I layed Liverpool away at 1.63 Spartak which hit a stop loss of 1.6 pretty quickly. That was it for trades on the match odds market.

50k betting and trading challenge September

Feel a little silly for even including this graph, given the tiny volume. In September there were a total of 4 trades with a profit of £19 being made.

Quentin Franks Racing – Tipster Service

50k betting and trading challenge September

The rut continues for Quentin Franks. For a service that was once just continually churning out profit on a monthly basis. It is now showing a loss for the last six months.

I have thought about cutting my losses with Quentin Franks. But sports betting is a long term game and I would like to at least give the service a full year before making any changes. It could quite easily hammer some decent profit out for the rest of the year,

In total I bet on 66 Quentin Franks selections in September. A total loss of -£216 was made.

50k betting and trading challenge September

September was a pretty quiet month for sports betting with only 11 bets. A small profit of £27 was made.

50k betting and trading challenge September

Summary

So I am now halfway through the 50k betting and trading challenge. A few things have become apparent.

  • I have over estimated my ability to put in large volume.
  • Even if a tipster has crushed the last few years making profits every month. Doesn’t mean that it will continue to do so in the future.
  • I always underestimate variance.

I would have loved to be smashing it out of the park every month. It would probably make better reading also and bring more traffic to the blog. But the reality of trying to make money from sports betting is that things aren’t always going to go smoothly.

Whilst I will still admit to being a little disappointed that I am not as close to hitting £50,000 profit as I would have hoped, after six months.

It isn’t going to change my approach. It is something that is said over and over. But making decent money from the sports betting markets requires a few things. an edge, a bankroll and time.

So all in all I’m just going to keep grinding all of the edges that I have. (Which you can replicate too).

For as long as they remain available.

50K Betting And Trading Challenge – August Results

After a tough month in July did things turn around in August?

Matched Betting – Sports Offers, Accumulators, Arbitrage

50k betting and trading challenge

This month I have put most of my focus into strategies that are basically guaranteed to make money. The graph above combines regular matched betting offers, some arbitrage and also plus ev accumulator bets.

There is a part of my ego that gets a kick out of making money from sports trading and sports betting. As they require a bit more skill then matched betting and I find it more rewarding. However ultimately if I just want to make money and look at my portfolio as a business. Then a bigger focus on matched betting is the easiest way to increase my profit margins.

In the past I have skipped over offers that are only worth £2 or £3 but in August I really upped my volume and tried to take advantage of as many offers as possible.

During August I took part in 261 matched betting offers. A total profit of £1261 was made.

Advantage Play – Casino Offers

I took part in 109 casino offers during August. Focusing mostly on the lower risk offers and I also decided to do more active with the slot offers on various bingo sites. There were a few higher risk offers chucked in but none of them paid off.

What you can see though is there was not much variance or volatility in my results. My biggest single win was £278 from £5 bingo slots bonus. My biggest loss was £200 from a high risk casino sign up.

Overall a profit of £733 was made from advantage play.

Pretty happy with my volume through August. During September though I plan to add in more high risk offers. Which have a larger ev but also an increased risk of losing more money. In the short term this might not payoff but long term should increase profits.

Trading Results

With the main leagues kicking off again there has been more opportunities for pre match trades. The Mayweather vs Mcgregor market was a tough one for me personally. As I thought Mayweather was huge value at odds of around 1.25. But Mcgregor backers were in force and this price drifted giving me my biggest trading loss of the month.

50k betting and trading challenge

I used my usual tactics in the secondary football markets to make some profits. Just waiting in good positions for recreational punters to place bets that aren’t value. Then trading out when the market is more liquid.

50k betting and trading challenge

Overall there were 12 trades and a profit of £111 was made.

Quentin Franks Racing – Tipster Service

50k betting and trading challenge

It seems to be a case of the same old story with Quentin Franks. The last five months have been a real struggle to grind out a profit with this service. In fact since the challenge began its showing a small loss of –£18.60. Quentin Franks selections are still crushing the starting SP on average so I do think its just a case of going through some rough variance.

However it is a service that requires a bit of time and planning to follow. Due to the odds movement on his selections. Hopefully that time will be repaid in the form of some nice profits going forward.

During August there were 65 selections and a total loss of -£16.60 was made.

Sports Betting – August Results

50k betting and trading challenge

As you can probably see from the graph above there were not a huge amount of bets this month. I only made a few bets that were from mostly my own analysis.

The biggest single bet I made was on Floyd Mayweather to beat Conor Mcgregor at average odds of 1.27 for £600.

In total there were 13 bets. A profit of £400 was made in August.

50k betting and trading challenge

Summary

Happy to get back on track this month. Plan on really hammering the matched betting and casino offers going forward. This is the easiest way to hit bigger monthly profits. Hopefully can build on this and have a good month in September.

50K Betting And Trading Challenge – July Results

Last month I wrote that when everything goes well in sports betting and trading its important to enjoy it. Because things don’t always go that smoothly. Well this month things didn’t go so smoothly.

Matched Betting – Sports Offers

It felt pretty flat this month in terms of matched betting opportunities this month. Seems like most bookmakers are gearing themselves up for the start of the football season in August. Most of the profit came from the regular horse racing offers.

For the month of July I took part in 142 offers. My total profit for the month was £380.

Advantage Play – Casino Offers

July bucked the previous trend of the hitting the ground running with casino offers. Was -£175 down at one point before things slowly started to turn around. An £80 win on a Ladbrokes offer sparked a better run of results. Eventually by the end of the month I was looking at a pretty decent return. Although still lower then previous months.

This month I have done 97 casino offers. A total profit of £693 was made.

Trading Results

Again its been a month of very low volume for trades. I did get a few horse trades and traded some Quentin Franks selections.

My issue with trading the horses is timing. With two young children I constantly get interrupted. Or often have to miss a good portion of the racing due to school or nursery activities. For me personally the football markets are much better. As they are much slower moving and I can monitor my positions on my phone even when out with the kids.

With the major leagues starting again in August this will improve. You can get much bigger stakes through these markets. I don’t pre match trade the summer leagues due to the lower liquidity and my own lack of knowledge of the teams.

I have been trading Mayweather vs Mcgregor fight which had some pretty crazy odds movement when it was announced. Hoping to have a good sized profit on this by fight time.

Overall I made 8 trades in June. A total profit of £63 was made.

Quentin Franks Racing – Tipster Service

It’s fair to say that Quentin Franks has struggled these last few months. Previously this was a tipster that was just churning out profits on a monthly basis. In the last four months I have recorded a loss of -£2 following his selections.

Not overly concerned as his selections still crush the Betfair SP on average. So the results should improve in time. Sports betting is a long term investment and I am not going to over react to short term results.

This month I bet a total of 91 selections from Quentin Franks Racing. A total loss of -£331 was made.

Sports Betting – June Results

So you can probably see that my sports betting for July sucked donkey balls.

The results were a combination of everything going poorly. The banker bets service had a bad month. My own short odds selections and mma bets also lost regularly.

I am aware that sports betting has a lot more variance involved. Compared to the other parts of my portfolio.

I take comfort that even those betting at really high volumes experience losing months sometimes. You’ll see millionaire sports bettor Jonas Gjelstad mention this in his video series.

Still though I did feel like a bit of a dick when I looked at my overall profit and loss for the month. With sports betting wiping out most of my profits from elsewhere.

This month I lost -£793 on sports betting from 36 bets.

My sports betting is a long term project for me. As I don’t think in the future matched betting and exploiting casino bonuses will be as profitable. Currently I only have 121 bets so its a very small sample size. So I am going to stick with it and see where I am at after 12 months.

Thoughts Going Forward

Well with 8 months remaining that £50,000 target looks pretty far off. I need to make an average of £5304 a month to accomplish it.

I certainly think that I can make a good push at it however. With the new season starting that means there will be much more matched opportunities available. My pre match trading is mostly on the major leagues which means more profit in that area. I have more resources to use for matched betting, advantage play and value betting.

As my bankroll increases I can invest more into pre match trading positions and value betting. So I don’t feel too dejected by this month. If anything it has probably taught me that I need to weight my portfolio more heavily on the low variance methods.

Would be nice if I can get to the stage where I have a 100k bankroll. Help me handle the swings of sports betting a bit better. But until I do get to that stage my time is probably best invested in the easier methods of making a profit.

August has already started off much better. So hopefully it continues and I will be reporting a £5000 plus profit in my next update.

50k Betting And Trading Challenge – June Results

Sometimes in betting and trading everything goes wrong at once and it feels like your just giving money away. Then there are times when everything goes well and you feel like your printing money. Well June was the latter and a month to enjoy.

Matched Betting – Sports Offers

Matched Betting Results June

With the major football leagues all being finished I thought sports offers would probably dry up a little. Fortunately this hasn’t been the case with some decent offers on the Confederations Cup and the US open. Most of my profit however came from Royal Ascot with there being a large number of decent offers available.

For the month of June I took part in 191 offers. My total profit for the month was £548.

Advantage Play – Casino Offers

There is a recurring theme in the profit and loss for casino offers. At the start of the month I seem to hit a really nice string of profits. This has happened in the two previous months also. No real reason for this its just a pattern that has occurred through randomness. But one that I am enjoying none the less.Rhino Win

This month I have done 65 casino offers. A total profit of £1108 was made. I feel like I am running really well with these casino offers. I haven’t really hit any long losing periods and the profits have been pretty consistent. However I know that that as the sign up offers start to slow down I will be left with the higher variance/high risk offers. Where things might not go as smoothly.

Trading Results

So I have barely traded at all this month with football being pretty quiet. However when I have traded things have gone well and I jumped on the best opportunities when I saw them.

Rangers Trade

The biggest single profit came from the Rangers vs Progres game. The half time odds for this market were really generous a few days before the game. I didn’t really have to do much research to see it was a good trading position and ended up with a nice profit as the market corrected itself before the game.

In May a mistake on my part lost me over £300. Last month I make another mistake but this one went the other way. I was trading the Vitor Belfort vs Nate Marquadt UFC fight. I had taken Belfort early at odds of 1.9 and put in lay bet at 1.75. However I didn’t lay the full amount and ended up with a losing position should Belfort not win.

Fortunately Belfort did win a decision in his home country with some suspect judging. I picked up £44 for that mistake.

Trading Results June

Overall I made 6 trades in June. A total profit of £302 was made.

Quentin Franks Results June

Quentin Franks pulled out some nice profits this month after struggling a little in the previous two. This month also marked the limitation of my Bet365 account. This was an account that I had for about 5 years and I was beginning to think that somehow I was slipping by Bet365 traders.

The straw that broke the camels back seemed to be backing a horse called Eternal Dream at odds of 33.00 and went off at odds of around 10.00. I was gubbed immediately after this bet.

This is the issue with a lot of profitable horse racing tipsters. Your soft bookmaker accounts won’t last forever but you can make a pretty high return on your investment whilst you do have them available.

Overall there were 111 selections for Quentin Franks. A total profit of £503 was made.

Sports Betting – June Results

50k Betting And Trading Challenge June Results

The betting gods were pretty kind to me this month. Everything was just super smooth with a consistent stream of winning bets. Now I am not naive enough to think this will happen every month and my number of bets was still pretty low. In total I made 36 bets in June and a total of £833 was made.

June Betting Results

My bets consisted of my own personal bets on mixed martial arts. Some of my own bets using the Banker Bets methodology of finding value in shorter odds and also selections from the Banker Bets service itself.

I know a lot of people are turned off by betting at low odds. Thinking there is no value at all in them. But value doesn’t just hide itself at specific odds ranges it can be found at odds of 100.00 or odds of 1.01.

Also looking at Banker Bets long term results he has a 2.6% roi from 1236 bets. It is important to note this recorded at average odds.

Given that I have consistently been able to better these odds by 0.02 decimal places on average. The roi rises to 5% which shows statistically significant edge if you run the numbers through a p-value test. So I am pretty confident that this style of betting can profitable long term.

Thoughts Going Forward

June was a really good month and hopefully I can continue to increase my monthly totals. Still feel like I am slacking off a bit in some areas. But there has to be a balance between work and family life. Given that my children are still small and interested in spending lots of time with their dad. I am going to make the most of it and not worry about the ev that I might be leaving on the table.

Sports betting is the part of my portfolio that I would like explore more. Because the majority of my profit comes from exploiting soft bookmakers it has a shelf life. My plan is to continue to develop betting/trading strategies and find services that are making money solely from Asian bookmakers and the exchanges.

Overall I am happy with things and will just keep doing what I’m doing. Hopefully variance won’t be too cruel and the profits will continue to flow in the coming months.

50K Betting And Trading Challenge May Results

The second month of the 50k challenge has been and gone. Is 50k profit in a year starting to look realistic?

Advantage Play – Casino Offers

50k Betting And Trading Challenge May

A £850 win right at the beginning of the month gave me a really good start. After that things were pretty steady with runs of small losses propped up by the odd win. In total I completed 61 casino offers. A profit of £1628 was made.

Enjoying these casino offers. As I can set them up and leave them running whilst I do other things that I enjoy. I used to be a quite a big computer game player when I was younger.

Got a good routine at the moment where I put the kids to bed around 19.00. Set up a casino offer and play the likes of Diablo 3, Bioshock Infinite and a few other old games I never got round to playing. An added advantage is the wife can’t moan that I wasting time playing computer games because I am essentially still working at the same time.

50k Betting And Trading Challenge May

So the first thing you will probably notice is a large drop in profits right at the end of the month. You might be wondering what happened?

 I fucked up

For some reason I didn’t back the horse First Sitting. This horse went on to win at odds of 19.00 and cost me the majority of my profits on what was already a pretty poor month for matched betting. Not sure why I didn’t back the horse. My best guess is that I got interrupted, thought I had placed my back bet and went on to place my lay bet without double checking.

Got to say this did tilt me pretty badly. I can take losses in sports betting pretty well or cut losing trades when I need to. But such a punishing loss for such a silly mistake super annoyed me. I actually bet £200 on Chelsea to win the FA cup shortly after this mistake. Luckily I stepped away from the computer, took a few breaths. Realised I was acting stupid and traded out of the position.

At the end of the day these losses will happen sometimes. A bookie or casino might go bust holding on to your funds. An exchange might having some unexpected downtime when you have a position open. Or you might just make a mistake which costs you. The one thing that I will do in the future though is double check my back and lay bets especially at the higher liabilities.

At the end of the month I was showing a profit of £91 after 127 offers.

Trading Results

50k Betting And Trading Challenge May

A pretty smooth month with every trade being pre event. The majority of the trades were pre match trades on football. £80 was the biggest total made on one trade in the Arsenal vs Man Utd match with the biggest loss being £30 on Chelsea vs Middlesbrough.

In total a profit of £426 was made from 28 trades.

With all the main leagues finishing I will not be making much money from the football markets. My plan is to trade the horse racing markets more. My approach is to swing trade and look for the obvious which requires lots of patience. I don’t really scalp the horses at all. I find it super frustrating and prefer to have a longer term view trading the horses.

There is also the Ward vs Kovalev boxing fight coming up and plenty of UFC events. These are normally markets that I do well from so hopefully there will be opportunities to profit.

50k Betting And Trading Challenge May

Quentin Franks managed to grind out a small profit this month. Things were looking good early on in the month with 4 winning trades on the bounce. Then came the losses and they just seemed to continue for the rest of the month with the odd winning bet. Before a recovery was made in the last few weeks.

There were a total of 92 bets this month from Quentin Franks and a small profit of £52 was made.

Sports Betting – Value Bets and Personal Bets50k Betting And Trading Challenge May

A pretty low volume month for my own sports betting. It was a mix of my own mixed martial arts bets and a few from free tipsters that I liked. There were 17 bets and a profit of £48 was made. Tiny sample size so not really much to say.

I have been thinking about betting more aggressively on MMA as a do have a pretty decent sample size of bets over the last few years. Mixed Martial Arts is a sport that I really enjoy betting on. Because the UFC is entertainment as much as it is a sport the way they hype certain fighters inflates their odds and creates really good betting opportunities. Pretty annoyed that the Bisping vs GSP fight has been cancelled as Bisping as an underdog in my opinion was a case of the above.

Thoughts Going Forward

It has been an ok month but one of the reasons I started this challenge was to give myself an incentive to push on profit wise. The last two months have been pretty similar in term of profit to what I was making prior to the challenge.

Now I haven’t really made any radical changes to my portfolio. Other then increasing the number of casino offers that I took part in. However I am in the process of scaling things up with the matched betting and casino offers.

In my interview with a professional sports bettor one piece of advice really stood out.

“make the most of the best opportunities before the betting landscape changes.”

It makes a lot of sense. I don’t know how many times I have heard/read the following “Poker/trading/arbitrage/sports betting is dead, it was way more profitable back in 2008/9/10.”

In the future I imagine people will be saying the same thing about matched betting and exploiting casino offers. So I am going to be increasing my volume in these areas whilst continuing to bet and trade in the same way.

50k Betting And Trading Challenge – Weeks 5 And 6

After a solid first month. Lets take a look at how the first two weeks of May have gone.

Advantage Play – Casino Offers

50k Betting And Trading Challenge Weeks 5 And 6

May got off to a really good start. I hit my biggest win taking £850 from a sign up bonus on the 3rd of May. Its always nice to get a big win early on as I knew then for the rest of the month I would most likely be reusing profits. Overall I have completed 28 casino offers so far this month. For a total profit of £1058.

My plan was to really increase my volume of casino offers. However I am pretty much on track to match last months volume. I think that big win at the beginning of the month probably slowed me down a little. Its tempting to be content after a big win but there is no real reason for me to not push a bit more going forward.

50k Betting And Trading Challenge Weeks 5 And 6

On a side note. I have been talking to someone that wants to get into these offers but in the past lost money on slot machines. They are worried that they might get into that habit again.

If you understand that playing casino games without a bonus is a long term losing proposition. Then really there should never be any reason to play them. I understand that the sounds, visuals and presentation of these slots may attract some people.

My advice is to make them as boring as possible. Turn off the sound, Use an auto clicker or autoplay, if there is a mini game where you have to get involved manually, follow the same pattern every time. Just keep in mind that these slots are designed to take money off people and without an edge there is no reason to touch them.

50k Betting And Trading Challenge Weeks 5 And 6

Wasn’t really hitting many offers early on in the month. But a steady stream of winners in the horse racing added some profit.

In total I took part in 69 offers. A total profit of £326 has been made so far this month. Not much to be said here. Most of the money came from the horses and with football coming to an end soon. I expect the next few months will rely heavily on horse racing offers to make a decent profit.

Accumulator Offers – No lays

Barely did any accumulator offers this month. At this stage of the season a lot of sides have nothing to play for. So i did cherry pick a few accumulators at the beginning of the month. But will leave them till the start of next season now.

3 accumulator bets were made. A total profit of £15.40 was made.

Trading Results

50k Betting And Trading Challenge Weeks 5 And 6

So far I have made 21 pre event trades this month. The majority of these trades were on the football markets. However the biggest profit was actually made on a boxing match. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez took on Chavez Jr in a huge fight between two big names in Mexican boxing.

I had some profit going in to the day of the fight from trading but there was also a huge arbitrage opportunity on fight night. A lot of money came in on Chavez Jr a few hours before and most European bookmakers didn’t change the odds. It meant that there were 5 or 6 bookmakers offering between 6.0-6.5 whilst a lay was available at Matchbook for 5.2.

Although not strictly pure exchange trading I have added this to the graph.

A total profit of £256 was made.

Quentin Franks Racing – Tipster Service

50k Betting And Trading Challenge Weeks 5 And 6

Quentin Franks got off to a really good start with 4 winners in a row to start the month. Unfortunately though over the next two weeks that profit has been given back to the bookmakers.

There have been 44 selections from Quentin Franks this month. A total loss of -£12.2 was made.

Sports Betting – Value Bets and Personal Bets

50k Betting And Trading Challenge Weeks 5 And 6

At the end of April I was sitting on a profit of £119 and two weeks later overall profit is at £133.5.

A huge £14.50 in profit has been made from 9 bets in May. There were 5 bets on mixed martial arts and four bets on football.

I have been reading a lot about sports betting this month. I went back and read a lot of posts from the Daily25 blog (Where an Aussie attempts to make $250 a day on average from sports betting.)

Also Rowan Day from the secret betting club published his annual profits from his bet diary. He made a 58% return on his capital. Now a 58% return is great but obviously in monetary terms for me personally it wouldn’t be huge (10k starting bankroll). However with say a 100k bankroll that return looks a lot more impressive.

One thing these blogs really show is that you need a long term mindset when approaching sports betting.

When I think of long term I think maybe 3 or 4 months but unless you are hammering a huge volume it really need to be longer.

For example Steve from Daily25 has made a total of  $284,890.00 from his betting. But in 2016 he had a losing year. A whole year where no profit was made. That really does seem like a long time.

I don’t think matched betting and advantage play opportunities will last forever. But for as long they are around they will be my main focus. My plan is to build up a large enough bankroll to the point where I can take a much longer term approach with sports betting as an investment.
