Making a million from sports betting

July 2021 is over, it was a month where we got to see England reach the final of Euro 2020.

Make the best possible start to the game before snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

Overall it was a pretty painful game to watch as you could see what was coming.

As someone that has got used to the ups and downs of betting. I feel pretty emotionally withdrawn from most sports but England still suck me it.

Maybe next year …………..

Let’s take at the results for July (Month 52).

Value Betting, Matched Betting And Arbitrage 

A negative result this month.

With no major football leagues playing it was mainly golf, tennis and horse racing.

Did a little arbitrage on MMA, although it probably should be classed more as trading as I predicted the odds on a selection were off pretty generous. Waited for the market to correct itself.

Then made the arbitrage bet.

Volume was down this month due to the kids being on holiday, also gave myself more days off then usual before football starts up again in August.

During July they were 151 bets.

A loss of -£226 was made.

There were times this month where I thought a big win was coming after hitting some bonus rounds on bigger stakes.

However those perky Halloween Fortune witches decided that it wasn’t my time.

Still it was nice to get back in profit.

A decent month of MMA betting due to a decent string of winners.

On the last event of the month.

There were a total of 19 bets made in July

A total profit of £915 was made.

Strong performance this month from Premier Greyhound Tips. Bet the majority of my selections using Betfair and setting bets to match at SP.

Neil Macdonald – £87 from 9 bets (Staking £200 per point)

I messed up my staking this month.

Should be £200 per point however I placed £100 for some earlier bets.

Also some bets were only partially matched on the exchanges as odds shortened quickly.

Looking forward to things picking up in August when more football returns.

Hopefully Neil provides another profitable season.

Since May I have been following three horse racing tipsters they are.

Horse racing is a sport that I know pretty much nothing about.

However it is on nearly everyday and if you can find a profitable angle then you can turnover a decent amount of money.

I bet all of the these selections as single bets.

Staking £10 on Quentin Franks and Kieran Ward’s selections.

£20 is used on the Betting Man Multiples.

A small profit of £51 was made this month.

After 169 bets.

Looking good so far but I know this can turn around pretty quickly.

Especially betting at higher odds.

Trading 

Not been too active with trading this month.

Had one £200 position lose on Shanghai Shenhua which was a kick in the balls.

Complete domination and then a 94th minute penalty miss.

That was my only football trade for the month.

Other then that, did quite a bit of trading on the UFC markets all pre fight.

Overall managed to scramble a small profit at the end of the month.

Took a lot of time off in July with the kids being off.

With betting it can be easy to sit in front of your computer for 10 hours a day.

As there is always something to do, if it’s not value betting. It’s analysing your betting or looking at tipsters. You can grind low value casino offers for a couple of hours a day.

Did think about joining Trade On Sports or Goal Profits for next season however feel like I have a good balance at the moment.

Balance is really important in life. At the moment the time I spend on betting and everything else in life. Fitness, Relationships, Time with kids, work, producing content for this blog etc.

Seems to be about right.

Because of that I won’t be changing the betting portfolio much. Will be adding Beth Bet results next month. Been testing out the software this month and results have been positive.

Can do this in the morning between 09.00-11.00 which is a time I use for my other horse racing bets. So it fits in pretty well.

Historical results are very promising and there is some scope to use it with limited accounts.

Will see how it goes.

June was a cracking month.

Great weather, Euro 2020 kicked off and in general life is good.

As always the betting and trading continues.

The total before this month was £114,755.

Let’s take a look at how things went in month 51.

A good month on the value betting front.

Did some betting shop arbitrage also this month. Not sure how long it will last as I am pretty sure no one else is betting into these markets locally but will take the opportunities when they come.

Euro 2020 has seen plenty of decent plus EV boosts. Bet365 even returned with their bet £50 pre match get £50 in-play offers which was great to see.

This should hopefully continue until the end of the tournament.

During June there were 241 bets.

A total profit of £1310 was made.

The graph says it all really.

No big wins and lost a few of the higher risk offers which require larger amounts to be staked (£200 upwards.)

It was pretty much a break even month for the MMA betting.

A total of 16 bets were made, totaling a loss of –£40.

I did place a few in-play bets that were all done on Betfair.

However for ease I will include them in the trading results section. As I did some hedging in between rounds for a few of them.

It took me way longer then normal to do my usual monthly round up.

Solid month for Neil Macdonald’s tips, missed a few bets which luckily meant I missed a few losers. Not much to say about Neil’s service that I haven’t already. It’s a great service and historically very profitable.

Another tipster that is just very solid all round, has years of profit to back him up. Annoyingly there was a winner at the end of the month at odds of 5.0 that I missed.

Placed the bet on Betfair and was adamant I clicked “bet to SP” however for some reason it wasn’t placed.

I put together a horse racing tipster portfolio in May.

It got off to a rocky start but it found some form this month.

The three horse racing tipsters I follow are.

Betting Man Multiples (Free Smart Betting Club Tipster)

I bet all of their selections on the betting exchange as singles.

(After looking through historical results. For Quentin Franks selections I am only taking at selection over odds of 5.0.)

Betting man multiples is now named (Magic Multiples) and suggests placing his selection as accumulator bets.

As you can see he hit some big winners this month.

The above is unfortunately for me not my bet.

As I wrote, I bet all these selections as singles on the betting exchanges. The reasoning being that I am always able to get better then the suggested odds. Along with the fact that I want to see if I can follow horse racing tipsters profitable using only the exchanges.

Even so I was left kicking myself that I don’t also take the bets as suggested in an accumulator on my remaining soft books.

Still taking these selections as single bets still worked out very profitable along with the two other services.

In terms of taking the suggested odds I never chase odds down.

If for example Quentin Franks suggests a bet at 12.00, the lowest odds I will take are 11.00.

A profit of £455 was made.

From a total of 164 bets.

Trading 

Not done a whole lot of pre match trading this month.

I am not that confident in my ability to trade the internationals that well pre match as my knowledge of each team isn’t the best.

However there have been some decent opportunities in-play.

This was probably my favourite trade of the tournament (which ended up being an outright bet)

Thought the odds on the Czech’s to qualify after Netherlands went down to 10 men was ridiculous. I did plan to trade out of this if the match went to penalties however the Czech’s wrapped it up before full time.

A total profit of £357 was made from Trading.

June was a really enjoyable month. Took quite a lot of days offs.

Watched the majority of the football and enjoyed the warm weather.

I did write last month that I was going to look at running a betting/trading service. Focused around MMA betting and trading the best opportunities in the football markets.

Alongside all the other stuff I do Value betting/Casino offers etc.

I still intend to do that as there seems to be enough interest. Will look at getting something together before the start of the new season.

April was a return to reality with a small profit of £770 being made.

The on going total before this month stood at £112,230 after 49 months.

Like most months this is pretty much 95% value betting at this point.

A late surge of profit came from a few bigger priced horses winning.

Was expecting a few Bet365 In-play £50 offers with both the all English Champions League and Man Utd reaching the Europa League.

However surprisingly there wasn’t one.

Sad to see one of the last really good matched betting offers disappear.

In May there were 275 bets.

It was a poor month on casino offers.

There are still offers around but they tend to be much smaller EV then last year.

You can still grind £20 an hour in EV from the free spins stuff over multiple accounts.

But to be honest I just don’t want to spend that time in front of the computer anymore.

Would rather spend that time in other areas.

There were 75 offers completed in May

A total loss of -£4 was made

Sports Betting Results

After taking a bit of beating last month.

It felt good to book in a profitable month of mma betting.

Things weren’t looking great in the middle of the month.

On the Chandler vs Oliveira card every single bet I made was a losing one.

The next week saw six winning bets in a row.

Funny how betting works sometimes.

During May I made a total of 16 bets.

A total profit of £503 was made.

In-Play Football Betting And Trading

This is a new addition to the portfolio.

It is a method that I have used in the past but decided to put more focus on during May.

Stakes used ranged from £100 to £300 depending on the odds ranges.

The first month went really well but obviously its a very small sample size.

I watched every game live.

Some selections were left as straight bets, others I traded out of depending what was happening in the game.

Won’t really say to too much about this at the moment.

Will see how results go over the next few months.

A profit of £1112 was made from 25 bets/trades.

(To show that I not just making shit up. Added the video above for some transparency. Doesn’t add up to £1112 exactly as there are a few other football bets and trades.)

Free Tipster Experiment

On to the tipster side of things.

This is an area where I put in a lot more volume this month.

The idea is to take the best free tips available from a number of different sources and see if its profitable long term.

Staking is very simple, I look to win around £50 for each selection.

Only 25 tips in May.

A profit of £161 was made.

Neil Macdonald Results

This month I finished writing a review for Neil Macdonald’s service which is worth a read if you are not familiar with his service.

It was a good start to the month for Neil but a bad run at the end meant I ended up with a loss.

There are a few missed bets on my part.

He had bets on Man City and Chelsea for the Champions League. Which I already had positions on before joining his service.

Then there were a few team totals bets that I didn’t get matched for on Betfair.

Wasn’t the best start using these horse racing tipsters.

However writing this a few days in June, a profit has now been made.

Stakes range from £10 to £20.

Only taking odds close to or above the advised prices.

(For example if a horse is tipped at 10.0 I would take no lower 9.4)

Interested to see whether this exchange only approach will work.

Trading 

Had some decent trades this month.

The Saul Alvarez vs Billy Joe Saunders was a really good one to trade.

Saunders odds were hovering around 6.0 for a while in the days leading up to the fight.

This was a good opportunity scalp 6.0-6.2.

Also ended up trading the champions league final on Betfair which went pretty well.

It was good to get back on track this month with a decent profit.

Starts in a week which means there should be plenty of opportunities to make money coming up.

2021 had started really well with strong profits in Jan, Feb and March.

However this month was frustrating at times and also a reminder about the reality of betting.

It’s not always going to go your way.

Let’s break down the results for April.

Value Betting, Matched Betting And Arbitrage 

In April it was basically 95% value betting and 5% matched betting.

The grand national was great from a value betting and matched betting perspective. Bet365 ran a great offer paying back 50% of your stake on each way betting.

I know a few people that multi account on a large level who cleaned up on this offer and sat back for the rest of the month. It was a reminder of the golden days of matched betting.

Personally I managed to land a nice win on Balko Des Flores each way at odds of 101 which propped up the profits for the month.

In April there were 402 bets.

A total profit of £1473 was made.

Another month of low volume on the casino offers.

The last few months things have really dried up with there being less weekly recurring offers available.

Due to this my focus has more been on the betting and trading side of things.

Hopefully things will pick up again but if not then its just a case putting more time into where the opportunities are.

There were 49 offers completed in April

Sports Betting Results

My sports betting results have been really solid for a number of years now.

One of my big weaknesses in betting is not adjusting stakes appropriately, I am pretty happy to win or lose a few hundred pounds in a day. Its the norm and I am comfortable with it.

But when daily losses start to creep closer to the thousands its uncomfortable. If you want to start winning more though you have to also accept that there will be be bigger losses.

This month I decided that I really should be betting much more on spots where I am extremely confident I have a decent edge (mma betting.)

Well this month didn’t go well.

I thought there were some big value opportunities during April. Timofey Nastyuhkin was big value in my eyes at odds 5.5, when in reality I had him closer to 3.0.

He went on to get wiped out in about a minute by Christian Lee in a One FC bout.

Usman to beat Masvidal by decisoon at 1.95 was another spot that had a lot of value, coming off his KO of Burns it seemed that Usman’s finishing ability was being a bit overrated. Especially given how durable Masvidal had been in the past.

That was the story of the month really.

Was happy with the bets I made it was just an inevitable run of losses that came in the month I decided to stake a bit more aggressively.

During April I made a total of 28 bets.

A total loss of -£1376 was made.

Free Tipster Experiment

There have now been 603 total bets for the free tipster experiment and things had been going really well up until April.

The idea is to take the best free tips available from a number of different sources and see if its profitable long term.

Staking is very simple, I look to win around £50 for each selection.

It was pretty much a steady decline for the most of the month.

Before a slight recovery at the end.

There were 62 selections.

A total loss of -£354 was made.

I withdrew my money out of Betmarkets during April which meant that the number tipsters I followed dropped quite considerably.

Neil Macdonald Results

April saw a new addition to the portfolio.

Having followed and bet Neil’s selections on Betmarkets for a while. I then started to follow his official service.

I have been betting his selection to £25 a point, which in hindsight is too low.

Going forward I will be increasing that to £50 a point.

It wasn’t the strongest month for Neil’s selection and there were a few missed bets on my part.

At the end of the month a very small profit had been made.

There were a total of 55 bets in April

A profit of £30 was made.

Trading 

In April I really made a renewed effort to do more trading.

Probably due to the fact that I knew the month wasn’t going too well and with the slump in volume  on casino offers. I needed to start looking at other areas more.

The month started well with a decent profit trading the grand national, I managed to profit pre fight trading most UFC main events. Jake Paul vs Ben Askren was another market that traded well.

When watching football live there were a few opportunities that looked fairly obvious.

The Real Madrid game was good example of when the market got things pretty wrong. As the under 2.5 goals market was 1.6 pre match.

However the game started really open with Chelsea getting 2 or 3 great chances early on. Two goals were scored in the first half and I hedged out for a nice profit.

Overall some renewed motivation to start trading again worked out this month.

During April I made a £757  profit from trading.

I put a lot more thought into my betting and trading over April. In previous months where bigger profits were made I felt pretty much on autopilot.

Value betting and casino offers is very much just clicking buttons without that much thought process.

So this month when things weren’t going great it was refreshing to have a deeper think about other area’s that I could find a profitable edge in.

At the start of May I also started following Premier Greyhound Tips.

It is a service that has been running since 2014 which is a good sign. Has been very profitable long term and so far I have found the odds quoted to be achievable.

Hopefully alongside Neil Macdonald’s service it will start to bring it some extra profit and I can continue to add more profitable tipsters whilst gradually increasing my turnover.

At the beginning of the year I gave myself a minimum target to get over the £100,000 in total profit.

I don’t like to make short term targets but it seemed that this would be very doable and I just wanted some kind of monetary goal for this year.

Then in March obviously the pandemic hit and things didn’t look too promising.

Well October has gone about as well as it possibly could and it does look like that overall profit target will be reached this year. 

Let’s take a look at where the profit came from in October.

It was sad to see the Betsafe/Betsson group leave the UK market this month. Had been finding a lot of value betting and arbitrage opportunities with them recently. They also seemed happy to take my money and I was able to get down decent amounts down.

However for whatever reason they left the UK market this month. I had a fair bit of money left in my accounts and thought It was most likely going to be a pain to get that money back.

Like I said earlier, this month went about as well as it could have. It only took a few days to get the money back in my account. Also the BML group paid out unsettled bets as winners. So I received just under £500 in unexpected profit from them.

So overall that’s pretty much the best case scenario when a bookmaker decides to close.

The majority of my value bets placed were using Trademate and Oddsmonkey. My results also include using money back on 2nd place with Will Hill and any value to be found from extra place offers.

This month a total of 354 bets were made in October.

The casino gods were really kind this month.

I visited my local witchdoctor this month and he told me to sacrifice 3 goats and a pig on day when the moon was full. That seemed to appease the gods this month and they rewarded me handily.

(Just to be clear the above is a joke, Rest assured that no animals have ever or will ever be harmed as a result of me trying to make money exploiting casino offers. Nor do I mean any offence to any practicing witch doctors. It is a noble profession and one I respect)

You can see from the graph above that the majority of October’s profit was from two big wins.

One of those wins I recorded as it happened on a bonus round, the other win was less expected.

This was on the slot Gonzo’s Quest slot. It was with a casino called Genesis casino that have a reputation of being difficult. However they recently had their UK licence reinstated and they paid me out in full within a few days.

Sports Betting Results

October was a solid month in terms of sports betting.

I avoided (for the most part) betting on football and stuck with betting on MMA.

The one football bet I did make was Atalanta to beat Midtjylland in the Champions League at 1.69. A lot of people that I respect the opinion of, had this as value so I was pretty happy to take it.

My biggest winning bet for the month was a £200 stake on Brian Ortega at odds of 2.7.

Overall I made 22 bets in October.

A profit of £750 was made.

The Basketball Geek Results

After tracking results of this service for a few months and being impressed with it.

I have added it to my overall betting strategy/portfolio whatever you prefer to call it.

For this strategy I used a variable staking strategy looking to win £40. Although I do round off my stakes so its not exactly £40 every time.

After 93 bets I ended up pretty much where I started.

A total profit of £2 was made.

Not much to report here. It wasn’t a disaster by any means just a month where things didn’t get going.

Previous results with this service have been very promising and I do think long term following the service will be profitable.

Basketball Geek Review

Trading 

This month I made £216 from trading.

The majority of the profit came from this trade.

Laying Dynamo Kiev when they were leading 2-0 away at Ferencvaros. The game ended up finishing 2-2.

I have wrote about this previously but trading is something I have been doing a lot less off. 

For a long time I was content to spend long hours in front of the computer however this year I have put a lot more focus on exercising regularly. Making sure I spend a lot of time with my kids and generally just leading a more balanced life style.

So my time trading is pretty minimal and I often just get involved when I see something that looks like obvious value (in my estimation).

Thoughts Going Forward

So obviously it was really good month where I was very fortunate.

If you do stick with casino offers then you will run into these months every now and again. It is just a case of putting in the volume and going through the bad periods.

I often get emails asking if casino offers are still worth doing. 

In my opinion yes they are, just get started. As we have seen with the matched betting/poker/arbitrage boom, these opportunities don’t last forever and usually diminish with time.

Going forward I don’t really plan on doing a huge amount more then what I am already. I have added one tipster and will look to add more in the future but currently happy with the workload and profit.

After a really good set of results in August.

I was looking to build on this in September and try to get over £100,000 in total profit before the end of 2020.

Let’s take a look at September’s results.

Value Betting And Arbitrage (Matched Betting)

In terms of matched betting offers there is not a lot going on at the moment. Betfair exchange throw out a fiver a week and if you are not limited from Bet365 they still have the occasional decent offer.

The majority of my betting volume is in the form of value betting.

This is betting boosts, accumulator promos, extra places, single bets.

I am still betting at the exchanges where 0% throws up opportunities and also been looking at the Asian bookies and finding value.

(I have been using the Trademate Sports software this month. To gather results for an updated review of the software. This has contributed to the profits this month. It should be noted that I am running well above EV for this month and an 18% roi is not to be expected long term.)

When it comes to arbitrage I am hammering my limited accounts. Also I do find opportunities for in-play arbitrage and some small arbs between sharp bookmakers and betting exchanges.

A lot of people think that arbitrage betting is dead in 2020, however this isn’t true there is still money to be made.

I made a total of 481 bets in August.

A total profit of £2106 was made.

On to the casino offers and all in all, this month was pretty average.

Mecca Bingo seem to be throwing out more offers then usual which is always good to see. Cashino were the latest to leave the UK market however won’t really miss them. As their reload offers tended to pretty poor.

Sports Betting Results

My own betting was poor this month.

It is the same pattern that rears its head again and again, make money from MMA and lose it betting pre match football.

Below are my long term stats over the last 3 years.

(No sport equals live bets in both football and MMA)

I have written previously that I should stop betting football pre match. Whilst I still had a very small positive long term roi up until this month. It’s been steadily decreasing for a while.

I don’t give football enough attention to warrant betting it and should have cut it out completely a while ago. 

It’s a tough market to beat in general and to think I can just profit from it with a very brief analysis is pretty stupid on my part.

Time to knock these bets pre match football bets on the head finally.

This month I made 14 bets.

A total loss of -£555 was made.

Trading 

Trading has been ok this month with no real standout trades.

When I see something obvious in the market, I will open up a position. It doesn’t always go to plan but over the long term its been profitable.

Unfortunately with work, family life, value betting, casino offers etc.

I don’t have a lot of time to trade.

This month I have spent time looking at automation and bot services.

Thoughts Going Forward

A solid month where a profit decent was made.

There is a part of me that is pretty content with just carrying on with what I am doing and making between £1k-£4k a month. But there is another part of me that wants to push on and see if I can make much more.

However to do that would mean increasing stakes and taking on more risk.

When it comes to matched betting, arbitrage and casino offers, I can’t really scale these much more.

If I want to up my staking levels. I have to look at value betting, my own personal betting and adding services which make money from the exchanges or sharp bookmakers.

Which would mean taking on more risk and variance. Probably meaning that I would endure more losing months and larger swings in my profit and loss.

Something that I need make a definitive decision on………….

At the end of this month I did start following a tipster called the Basketball Geek. Having followed this tipster for a few months for review purposes (Which I will write up in the next few days). I am confident that he is profitable long term.

Although I have issues with the way they record odds and the quoted odds they use for his results are not obtainable. He is a good tipster that beats the closing odds regularly and can be be followed using Asian bookmakers (not all selections however.)
