The Tipstrr Experiment: Can You Make Money Following Tipsters?

Can you actually make a consistent profit following professional betting tipsters? And more importantly, can you do it using betting exchanges without worrying about bookmaker restrictions?

That’s exactly what I’m going to find out.

I’ve selected five tipsters from Tipstrr, one of (if not the biggest) platform that tracks the performance of sports betting tipsters, and I’m going to follow their selections using real money.

Over the coming months, I’ll track every bet, record my profits and losses, and publish monthly updates showing exactly how each tipster performs.

There will be no cherry picking winning bets, no hiding losing months, and no unrealistic claims about guaranteed profits.

Just five tipsters, real bets, and transparent results.

Let’s see if following professional tipsters can actually make money.

Tipstrr Experiment

What Is Tipstrr?

Tipstrr is a sports betting tipster platform where bettors can find and follow tipsters covering football, horse racing, tennis, basketball and other sports.

One of its biggest selling points is its detailed performance tracking.

Rather than simply advertising winning selections, tipsters have historical records that can be examined using statistics such as:

  • Total number of bets
  • Historical profit and loss
  • Return on investment (ROI)
  • Average betting odds
  • Winning percentage
  • Performance across different sports and betting markets

Vic 777 Stats

This gives prospective followers considerably more information than simply looking at a tipster’s recent winning streak.

However, there’s an important distinction between a tipster showing a historical profit and a follower actually being able to replicate those results.

That’s what makes this experiment interesting.

Why Am I Running This Experiment?

I’ve been involved in sports betting for over nine years, generating more than £220,000 in cumulative profits through methods including matched betting, arbitrage, value betting and betting exchanges.

Throughout that time, one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that finding profitable bets is only half the battle. Being able to place those bets consistently is equally important.

Many successful tipsters advertise selections at bookmakers that are known to restrict profitable customers.

That’s fine if you’re just starting out and have access to those accounts.

But what happens when those bookmakers have limited you?

Even if a tipster has an excellent historical record, their service becomes considerably less useful if you cannot obtain the advertised odds.

This is why I wanted to approach the experiment differently.

Rather than simply following tipsters at traditional bookmakers, I’m going to see whether their selections can be profitable when placed through betting exchanges. All of the tipsters that I’ve selected are profitable to Pinnacle odds. In theory I should be able to match or exceed the roi by using exchanges.

If successful, it could provide a more sustainable way of following professional tipsters over the long term.

Why Use Betting Exchanges?

Betting exchanges allow customers to bet against other bettors rather than directly against a traditional bookmaker.

Platforms such as Betfair Exchange, Smarkets and Matchbook operate differently from conventional bookmakers.

One of their biggest advantages is that consistently profitable bettors are generally not subjected to the same account restrictions that winning customers frequently encounter at traditional sportsbooks.

However, exchanges aren’t perfect.

There are several potential disadvantages:

1. Different odds

A tipster might recommend a selection at odds of 2.10, but the best available exchange price could be 2.04.

That difference might seem insignificant, but over hundreds or thousands of bets, consistently accepting worse odds can turn a profitable strategy into a losing one.

2. Liquidity

Some markets have very little money available, particularly lower-league football matches and niche betting markets.

This can make it difficult to place bets at the advertised odds.

3. Commission

Depending on the exchange and your account, commission charges may be charged on net winnings in a market.

This is another factor that needs to be included when calculating the true profitability of a tipster. The betstaken on the exchanges have to account for this

How I Selected My Five Tipsters

I didn’t want to simply pick the five tipsters with the highest advertised ROI.

When selecting my five tipsters, I considered several factors.

1. Historical performance

I looked for tipsters with positive historical returns and a reasonable number of recorded selections.

A profitable record doesn’t guarantee future success, but it provides a useful starting point.

2. Profitable to Pinnancle

One area I paid particular attention to was whether a tipster was profitable with Pinnacle. Alongside this I wanted to see a decent sample size of bets that would give an indication the proitability wasn’t down just to pure luck.

3. Exchange availability

This was particularly important.

I wanted tipsters whose selections could realistically be placed on betting exchanges.

There would be little point in choosing a profitable tipster whose selections were only available in obscure markets with almost no exchange liquidity.

4. Long term sustainability

Finally, I wanted tipsters whose approaches appeared suitable for following over an extended period.

The objective isn’t to make a quick profit from a handful of bets.

I want to discover whether following professional tipsters could become another sustainable sports betting strategy.

The Five Tipsters I’m Following

After examining the available statistics, I’ve selected the following five tipsters for the experiment.

How I’ll Track My Results

Transparency is going to be one of the most important parts of this experiment.

Every bet I place will be recorded, including the actual odds obtained and the final result.

I’ll track:

  • Number of bets placed
  • Profit and loss
  • Return on investment
  • Average odds obtained
  • Performance of each individual tipster
  • Overall combined performance

I’ll also compare my results against the tipsters’ published performance wherever the data allows.

This should help answer an important question:

Even if a tipster is profitable on Tipstrr, can the average follower realistically achieve similar results using betting exchanges?

Final Thoughts: Can You Make Money Following Tipstrr Tipsters?

At this stage, I genuinely don’t know how the experiment will turn out.

I’ve selected five tipsters based on their historical performance, but there’s no guarantee they’ll continue producing profitable selections.

It’s also possible that some tipsters will remain profitable on paper while my own results suffer because of differences in odds, exchange liquidity or commission.

That’s precisely why I wanted to run this experiment.

Rather than relying on advertised statistics, I want to find out what actually happens when you follow these selections with real money.

I’ll be updating this article every month with my results, including the losing periods as well as the profitable ones.

Bookmark this page and follow the experiment to see whether five Tipstrr tipsters can deliver a genuine long term profit on the betting exchanges.
